Join us for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist on the Feast of Saint Matthias the Apostle.
The Feast of St. Matthias honors the apostle chosen to take the place of Judas among the Twelve. During the days between Jesus’ Ascension and Pentecost, the disciples gathered in prayer and discernment. Peter reminded them that the company of apostles must again be complete, selecting one who had accompanied Jesus from his baptism to his ascension and could bear witness to the resurrection. Two men were proposed—Joseph called Barsabbas and Matthias—and after prayer, lots were cast, with the lot falling to Matthias, who was then numbered among the apostles.
Though Scripture records nothing further about him, Matthias stands as a model of quiet faithfulness and steadfast discipleship—one who followed Jesus without fame and was ready when called to serve. Later legends, though imaginative, portray him as courageous and devoted in hardship, reflecting the same grace and humility seen in the biblical account. The Church remembers him as a witness chosen by God, whose hidden service reminds all Christians that steadfast faith and readiness to serve are themselves marks of true apostleship.
