SUMMARY:Holy Cross Day
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist on Holy Cross Day. The Rector\, T.J. Freeman\, will preach. \nThis observance recalls the dedication in 335 A.D. of the great church complex built at the site of Jesus’ death and resurrection in Jerusalem. According to the historian Eusebius\, Emperor Constantine ordered this magnificent shrine to honor Christ’s resurrection\, entrusting its construction to his mother\, the empress Helena. During the excavations\, Helena is said to have discovered a relic believed to be the true cross. \nThe complex included a basilica for the Liturgy of the Word and a circular church\, called The Resurrection\, with its altar set over the tomb. Between them lay an open courtyard where the exposed rock of Calvary stood\, becoming the focal point for the veneration of the cross on Good Friday and for daily prayers. The chosen date of September 14 for the dedication echoed the biblical account of Solomon’s temple being dedicated in the same month\, making Holy Cross Day a lasting commemoration of both the cross and the resurrection.

SUMMARY:The Feast of Saint Matthew
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist on the Feast of St. Matthew\, Apostle and Evangelist. The Associate Rector\, Mo Major\, will preach. \nMatthew\, one of the twelve apostles\, is traditionally identified with Levi\, the tax collector whom Jesus called to follow him. The Gospels describe him as sitting at the custom-house when Jesus said\, “Follow me\,” and Matthew immediately left everything behind\, later hosting a meal for Jesus. \nThis act drew criticism\, as tax collectors were despised as collaborators with Rome and notorious for extortion\, making them social outcasts in Jewish society. Yet Jesus not only welcomed Matthew but also upheld tax collectors as examples of humility in prayer and repentance. \nEarly Christian writers record that Matthew preached in Judea and possibly traveled eastward to spread the gospel\, though details of his later ministry and death remain uncertain. He is honored in the Church as both apostle and martyr\, remembered for the witness of a life transformed by Christ’s call.

SUMMARY:The Feast of Saint Luke
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist on the Feast of St. Luke the Evangelist. \nSt. Luke was a physician and companion of Paul in the early missionary journeys of the church. Tradition credits him as the author of both the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles\, written in Greek so that Gentiles might come to know the story of Jesus. \nLuke’s Gospel alone records treasured stories such as the annunciation to Mary\, the visit to Elizabeth\, the birth of Jesus in the manger\, the angels appearing to shepherds\, and Simeon’s blessing in the temple. He also includes parables and miracles not found elsewhere\, highlighting Christ’s compassion and healing power. Acts continues the story with the coming of the Holy Spirit\, the apostles’ witness in the face of persecution\, and the spread of the Good News. \nLuke is said to have remained with Paul until his death in Rome\, and though the details of his own death are uncertain\, tradition places it in Greece. Honored as the patron saint of physicians and artists\, Luke is also remembered in Orthodox tradition as the first iconographer\, bearing witness in word and image to the love of Christ.

SUMMARY:The Feast of Saint Andrew
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist on the Feast of Saint Andrew the Apostle. \nSt. Andrew is best known as the brother of Simon Peter\, yet he holds a distinct and important place among the apostles. Once a disciple of John the Baptist\, Andrew was among the first to follow Jesus after John proclaimed him as the Lamb of God. His immediate response was to bring his brother to Christ\, making Andrew the first missionary in the circle of disciples. \nThough not part of Jesus’ inner three—Peter\, James\, and John—Andrew appears in key moments\, including when he brought the boy with the loaves and fishes to Jesus at the feeding of the multitude. The Gospels portray him as one eager to connect others to Christ. While little is known about his later ministry\, early tradition claims he preached in Scythia and was martyred on an X-shaped cross. Honored as the patron saint of Scotland\, Andrew is remembered as one who quietly but faithfully led others to the Lord.
