SUMMARY:Children and Youth Sunday + Popsicle Party
DESCRIPTION:It’s time for one of St. Paul’s sweetest annual traditions: Children and Youth Sunday\, when we turn the service over to the kids! \nWe hope to fill the pews with the joyful presence\, wonder\, and yes\, even the noise\, of St. Paul’s children and youth – from babies to teenagers. One of the best parts of this day is watching kids of many ages step into “big kid” roles in worship. \nAll three children’s and youth choirs will sing\, and there are many other ways to help lead the service\, including serving as an acolyte\, usher\, lector\, or altar guild helper. \n  \nThe Episcopal Church firmly believes that children and youth of all ages and stages are full participants in weekly worship. Whether it’s babies wailing from the pews\, toddlers climbing over the altar rail\, or acolytes giggling during a long sermon\, all our kids are essential to St. Paul’s community as we witness and live out the gospel. \nWe hope families with children of all ages will show up and represent our vibrant community of young people!  \n  \nAnd\, Trinity Sunday is our last day of church school and the program year. After the 9 a.m. service\, church school students and their adults will celebrate with a popsicle party in the courtyard and take a moment to cheer on all the kids who are moving up to new classrooms next year. We will also honor our volunteer church school teachers! We hope you’ll join us!

SUMMARY:The Feast of the Visitation
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist on the Feast of the Visitation of the Blessed Virgin Mary. The Assistant Rector\, Patricia Rose\, will preside and preach. \nThe Feast of the Visitation commemorates Mary’s visit to her cousin Elizabeth as told in the Gospel of Luke. Bearing the unborn Christ\, Mary journeyed to the hill country to share in Elizabeth’s joy\, for Elizabeth too was expecting a son—John the Baptist. When Mary greeted her\, Elizabeth was filled with the Holy Spirit and cried out\, “Blessed are you among women\, and blessed is the fruit of your womb!” In that moment\, the child in Elizabeth’s womb leapt for joy\, recognizing the nearness of the Savior. Mary responded with her song of praise\, the Magnificat\, proclaiming God’s mercy and the lifting up of the humble. \nThe Visitation reveals the meeting of the old and new covenants\, of prophecy and fulfillment\, and of two faithful women whose openness to God made way for salvation’s unfolding. The feast invites the faithful to share Mary’s joy\, her humility\, and her readiness to bear Christ into the world through lives of gratitude and service.

SUMMARY:The Eve of the Feast of Saint Barnabas
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist on the eve of the Feast of Saint Barnabas the Apostle. The Rector\, T.J. Freeman\, will preach and preside. \nThe Feast of St. Barnabas honors one of the earliest followers of Christ and a key figure in the spread of the gospel. A Levite from Cyprus\, Barnabas—whose name means “son of encouragement”—was known for his generosity and faith. He first appears in Acts as one who sold his land and gave the proceeds to the apostles\, and later as the trusted disciple who welcomed Paul after his dramatic conversion\, introducing him to the hesitant church in Jerusalem. \nBarnabas and Paul became partners in ministry\, serving the growing Christian community in Antioch\, bringing relief to Jerusalem during famine\, and embarking together on the first great missionary journey. Their preaching was so powerful that the people of Lystra mistook them for gods\, calling Barnabas “Jupiter” for his commanding presence. Though Barnabas and Paul eventually parted ways over a disagreement about Mark\, both continued their evangelizing work—Barnabas returning to Cyprus\, where tradition says he founded the church and was later martyred. Remembered for his generosity\, courage\, and encouragement of others\, Barnabas embodies the spirit of one who sought not his own fame\, but the flourishing of Christ’s church.

SUMMARY:The Feast of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist on the Feast of the Nativity of Saint John the Baptist. The Reverend Nan Hildebrand will preach. \nThis feast honors the miraculous birth of the prophet who prepared the way for the Lord. The son of Zechariah and Elizabeth\, John was born to elderly parents through God’s promise and is described in Luke’s Gospel as a relative of Jesus\, arriving six months before him. When Zechariah doubted the angel’s message announcing John’s conception\, he was struck speechless until the child’s birth\, when his voice returned in the canticle of praise known as the Benedictus. \nJohn grew up to live an austere life in the wilderness\, clothed in camel’s hair and sustained by locusts and wild honey. His preaching called the people to repentance and renewal in preparation for the coming of the Messiah\, and his baptism of Jesus in the Jordan marked the beginning of Christ’s public ministry. \nThe Gospels remember him as both prophet and forerunner\, who pointed beyond himself to the One who was to come\, declaring\, “He must increase\, but I must decrease.” John’s feast celebrates his courage\, humility\, and faithfulness\, inviting the church to follow his example in proclaiming the truth and preparing hearts for Christ.

SUMMARY:The Feast of Saint Peter and Saint Paul
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist on the Feast of Saint Peter and Saint Paul. The Rector\, T.J. Freeman\, will preach. \nThe Feast of St. Peter and Paul honors the two towering figures of the early Church whose witness and martyrdom shaped Christian faith and mission. Though remembered individually—Peter for his confession of Christ on January 18 and Paul for his conversion on January 25—the Church joins them in one feast\, recalling the tradition that both were martyred in Rome during Nero’s persecution around the year 64. Peter\, the fisherman from Galilee\, and Paul\, the scholar and missionary of the Gentiles\, differed greatly in background and temperament. \nTheir early disagreements over the inclusion of Gentile believers gave way to a shared devotion to Christ and the gospel’s spread throughout the world. Tradition holds that Peter was crucified upside down\, deeming himself unworthy to die as his Lord did\, while Paul\, a Roman citizen\, was executed by the sword. Together they represent the unity of faith amid diversity of calling—Peter\, the steadfast shepherd of the Church\, and Paul\, the tireless preacher of grace. Their feast invites the faithful to stand firm on the same foundation\, Jesus Christ\, and to bear courageous witness to the gospel in every generation.

SUMMARY:The Feast of Saint Mary Magdalene
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist on the Feast of St. Mary Magdalene. The Associate Rector\, Mo Major\, will preach. \nOn this day\, we lift up the devoted disciple who was among Jesus’ closest followers and the first witness to his resurrection. A woman from Magdala\, near Capernaum\, Mary was healed by Jesus\, who cast out seven demons from her\, transforming her life completely. Thereafter\, she joined the group of women who accompanied and supported Jesus and his disciples in their ministry. \nThe Gospels portray her as steadfast and faithful\, remaining near the cross as Jesus suffered and later going to his tomb to mourn and anoint his body. In her grief\, she encountered the risen Christ\, who revealed himself by calling her name. Commissioned by Jesus to announce his resurrection to the disciples\, she became the first messenger of the good news—hence her traditional titles\, “apostle to the apostles” and “equal to the apostles” in the Eastern Church. \nMary Magdalene stands as a model of healing\, love\, and unwavering faith\, reminding the Church that true discipleship is rooted in both devotion to Christ and bold witness to his risen life.

SUMMARY:The Feast of Saint James the Apostle
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist on the Feast of St. James the Apostle. The Associate Rector\, Mo Major\, will preach. \nThe Feast of St. James the Apostle honors James\, son of Zebedee and brother of John\, who was one of the first to respond to Jesus’ call to discipleship. Along with Peter and John\, James belonged to the inner circle of three who witnessed key moments in Jesus’ ministry: the raising of Jairus’s daughter\, the Transfiguration\, and the agony in Gethsemane. \nKnown for his zeal and fiery temperament\, James earned the nickname “Boanerges”—meaning “Son of Thunder”—from Jesus. Yet\, that passion was transformed into courage and faithfulness\, leading him to become the first of the apostles to suffer martyrdom. \nAs the Acts of the Apostles recounts\, “Herod…had James\, the brother of John\, put to death with the sword\,” making him a witness to the Gospel in both life and death. According to ancient tradition\, his relics were later moved to Compostela\, Spain\, where the great shrine of Santiago de Compostela became one of Christianity’s most famous pilgrimage sites. The Feast of St. James celebrates his steadfast devotion and calls the faithful to serve Christ with the same spirit of bold\, selfless love.

More than a private spiritual experience\, the Transfiguration stands among the great manifestations of Jesus’ divine identity\, alongside the angelic announcements at his birth and resurrection and the descent of the Spirit at his baptism. \nAs the disciples looked on\, the veil was briefly lifted\, and they saw Jesus radiant in divine light\, speaking with Moses and Elijah—signs that he is the fulfillment of both the Law and the Prophets. A cloud of divine presence overshadowed them\, and a heavenly voice declared\, “This is my Son\, the Beloved; listen to him.” Immediately after this revelation\, Jesus foretold his suffering and death\, reminding his followers that the glory they glimpsed could not be separated from the path of the cross. \nIn the Transfiguration\, the Church perceives a foreshadowing of the risen and ascended Christ\, a vision held in highest esteem in the Eastern tradition and now widely celebrated across Anglicanism. It is a promise that beyond the disquiet of this world\, the faithful shall behold the King in his beauty.

SUMMARY:The Feast of Saint Mary the Virgin
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist on the Feast of Saint Mary the Virgin. The Associate Rector\, Mo Major\, will preach. \nFrom the earliest days of the church\, Mary has been venerated as the mother of our Lord\, and the Gospels give us glimpses of her quiet strength—receiving the angel’s announcement with trust\, nurturing Jesus in Nazareth\, accompanying him throughout his ministry\, standing faithfully at the foot of the cross\, and praying with the disciples in the upper room until Pentecost. \nHer Magnificat reveals a heart shaped by Scripture and attuned to God’s justice\, echoing themes later sounded in Jesus’ own preaching. While later devotion has woven many legends around her\, Scripture itself establishes her unique place among the saints: she was closest to Jesus in the years that formed him\, and she remained steadfast in faith at every stage of his life. Thus the church has long believed that she holds a place of special honor.

SUMMARY:The Feast of Saint Bartholomew
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist on the Feast of Saint Bartholomew the Apostle. The Rector\, T.J. Freeman\, will preach. \nThis feast honors one of the Twelve whose faithful witness endures even though Scripture tells us little about him. Named in the Gospels of Matthew\, Mark\, and Luke\, Bartholomew—meaning “son of Tolmai”—is often identified with Nathanael\, the friend of Philip in John’s Gospel. When Jesus called him\, Nathanael responded with honest skepticism\, only to be recognized by Jesus as “an Israelite without guile.” Upon realizing who stood before him\, Nathanael proclaimed\, “Rabbi\, you are the Son of God.” \nAncient tradition holds that Bartholomew carried the gospel to distant lands\, including India\, where the teacher Pantaenus reportedly found a Hebrew copy of Matthew’s Gospel left behind by him. Later accounts place his martyrdom at Albanopolis in Armenia\, where he was said to have been flayed alive for his faith. Bartholomew’s life reminds the church of the courage to bear witness even when unseen and of the call to proclaim Christ with integrity\, steadfastness\, and truth.

SUMMARY:The Feast of the Decollation of Saint John the Baptist
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist on the Feast of the Decollation of Saint John the Baptist. The Rector\, T.J. Freeman\, will preach. \nThe Commemoration of the Beheading of Saint John the Baptist is observed on August 29. John preached repentance from sins\, and although it made him unpopular in his day\, he followed the way of the prophets and preached the commandments of God before men. John the Baptist was arrested and imprisoned for speaking out against the unlawful relationship between Herod and Herodias\, his brother Philip’s wife. \nHerod didn’t immediately put John to death; he feared the reaction of the crowd\, who regarded him as a prophet. \nHowever\, on Herod’s birthday\, the daughter of Herodias danced before the party. Her dancing was so pleasing that the ruler promised to grant her whatever she might ask. Herodias prompted\, “Give me the head of John the Baptist here on a platter.” Herod was grieved\, but out of regard for his oath and his guests\, he had John beheaded and the head brought to the girl on a platter. \nThis observance reminds us to speak God’s truth with boldness and hear with humility when it is spoken to us\, through Jesus Christ\, the firstborn from the dead.

SUMMARY:Holy Cross Day
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist on Holy Cross Day. The Rector\, T.J. Freeman\, will preach. \nThis observance recalls the dedication in 335 A.D. of the great church complex built at the site of Jesus’ death and resurrection in Jerusalem. According to the historian Eusebius\, Emperor Constantine ordered this magnificent shrine to honor Christ’s resurrection\, entrusting its construction to his mother\, the empress Helena. During the excavations\, Helena is said to have discovered a relic believed to be the true cross. \nThe complex included a basilica for the Liturgy of the Word and a circular church\, called The Resurrection\, with its altar set over the tomb. Between them lay an open courtyard where the exposed rock of Calvary stood\, becoming the focal point for the veneration of the cross on Good Friday and for daily prayers. The chosen date of September 14 for the dedication echoed the biblical account of Solomon’s temple being dedicated in the same month\, making Holy Cross Day a lasting commemoration of both the cross and the resurrection.

SUMMARY:The Feast of Saint Matthew
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist on the Feast of St. Matthew\, Apostle and Evangelist. The Associate Rector\, Mo Major\, will preach. \nMatthew\, one of the twelve apostles\, is traditionally identified with Levi\, the tax collector whom Jesus called to follow him. The Gospels describe him as sitting at the custom-house when Jesus said\, “Follow me\,” and Matthew immediately left everything behind\, later hosting a meal for Jesus. \nThis act drew criticism\, as tax collectors were despised as collaborators with Rome and notorious for extortion\, making them social outcasts in Jewish society. Yet Jesus not only welcomed Matthew but also upheld tax collectors as examples of humility in prayer and repentance. \nEarly Christian writers record that Matthew preached in Judea and possibly traveled eastward to spread the gospel\, though details of his later ministry and death remain uncertain. He is honored in the Church as both apostle and martyr\, remembered for the witness of a life transformed by Christ’s call.

SUMMARY:The Feast of Saint Michael + All Angels
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist on the Feast of St. Michael and All Angels. \nThe Feast of St. Michael and All Angels\, often called Michaelmas\, celebrates the presence and power of God’s messengers. The word angel means “messenger\,” and throughout scripture angels appear as agents of God’s will—sometimes visible\, sometimes unseen—bringing guidance\, strength\, and protection. \nChristian tradition depicts them with wings for swiftness\, swords for power\, and radiant garments for enlightenment\, though such imagery has sometimes caused skeptics to dismiss them as mythical. \nOf the many angels mentioned in the Bible\, only four are named: Michael\, Gabriel\, Uriel\, and Raphael. Chief among them\, Michael is honored as the defender of God’s people\, the one who overcomes evil and brings peace at the end of life’s struggles. His feast has been widely observed for centuries\, and churches dedicated to him include Mont Saint-Michel in France and Coventry Cathedral in England\, testifying to his enduring place in Christian devotion.

SUMMARY:The Feast of Saint Luke
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist on the Feast of St. Luke the Evangelist. \nSt. Luke was a physician and companion of Paul in the early missionary journeys of the church. Tradition credits him as the author of both the Gospel of Luke and the Acts of the Apostles\, written in Greek so that Gentiles might come to know the story of Jesus. \nLuke’s Gospel alone records treasured stories such as the annunciation to Mary\, the visit to Elizabeth\, the birth of Jesus in the manger\, the angels appearing to shepherds\, and Simeon’s blessing in the temple. He also includes parables and miracles not found elsewhere\, highlighting Christ’s compassion and healing power. Acts continues the story with the coming of the Holy Spirit\, the apostles’ witness in the face of persecution\, and the spread of the Good News. \nLuke is said to have remained with Paul until his death in Rome\, and though the details of his own death are uncertain\, tradition places it in Greece. Honored as the patron saint of physicians and artists\, Luke is also remembered in Orthodox tradition as the first iconographer\, bearing witness in word and image to the love of Christ.

SUMMARY:The Feast of Saint James of Jerusalem
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist on the Feast of St. James of Jerusalem. \nSt. James of Jerusalem is known in scripture as the Lord’s brother—though tradition variously describes him as brother\, half-brother\, or cousin of Jesus. Converted after the resurrection\, James became the first Bishop of Jerusalem and a key leader in the early church. \nPaul notes that James was granted a special appearance of the risen Christ\, and at the Council of Jerusalem he helped guide the church toward welcoming Gentile converts without imposing the full weight of Jewish law. Known as “James the Just\,” he lived a life of prayer\, simplicity\, and holiness\, and was deeply revered for his intercession on behalf of his people. His bold witness to Jesus as Messiah\, however\, provoked opposition\, and according to tradition he was thrown from the temple roof and beaten to death for his testimony. Honored as both apostle and martyr\, James is remembered for his wisdom\, his reconciling spirit\, and his steadfast faith unto death.

SUMMARY:The Feast of Saint Simon + Saint Jude
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist on the Feast of Saint Simon and Saint Jude\, Apostles. \nSt. Simon and St. Jude are two of the least-known apostles\, yet tradition has long linked their names and their missionary witness. Both appear in the New Testament lists of the twelve\, with Simon distinguished by the title “the Zealot\,” though it is unclear whether this referred to his former association with the Jewish Zealot movement or simply his fervent devotion to God’s law. Jude\, sometimes called Thaddeus\, is remembered in popular devotion as the patron saint of desperate or lost causes. \nAncient tradition holds that Simon and Jude carried the gospel to Persia and Armenia\, where they were martyred together\, their steadfast witness sealed in blood. The church honors them for their faithfulness\, zeal\, and courage\, reminding us that even the least known disciples can bear lasting fruit in God’s mission.

DESCRIPTION:Join us for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist on the Feast of the Epiphany. \nOn this holy feast of the Epiphany\, we remember the God who\, by the leading of a star\, made known his Son to the peoples of the earth. Like the Magi\, we are led by light to seek the glory of Christ\, revealed in humility and love. \nWe’ll mark the arrival of the magi with the ancient Epiphany custom of the “chalking of the doors” and a service of the Holy Eucharist\, followed by a dessert reception featuring cake and toasting with champagne and sparkling grape juice. “Chalking the doors” is a ritual to ask God’s blessing on our homes and lives. We’ll send everyone home with chalk and special prayers to observe this custom in their own homes.

SUMMARY:The Feast of The Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Join us for the celebration of the Holy Eucharist on the Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord. \nThe Feast of the Presentation of Our Lord recalls the moment when Mary and Joseph brought the infant Jesus to the Temple in Jerusalem\, offering him to the Lord in keeping with the law that every firstborn son be dedicated to God. \nAlso known as the Purification of Saint Mary the Virgin\, the Meeting of Christ with Simeon\, or Candlemas\, the feast reveals the rich layers of meaning Christians have found in this event. When Simeon received the child in his arms\, the old covenant met the new: the age of sacrifice and offering gave way to the perfect self-offering of God’s own Son. \nSimeon’s song\, the Nunc dimittis\, proclaims the light of salvation for all people—a light symbolized by the blessing of candles traditionally observed on this day. Simeon is not alone in recognizing the Messiah in his midst; Anna\, a prophet of great age who worshipped at the temple night and day with fasting and prayer\, offered testimony on the infant’s behalf: that this child would be a sign for the redemption of Jerusalem. The Presentation reminds the faithful that Christ\, the light of the world\, has entered the temple of humanity\, and invites them to offer their own hearts and lives in gratitude and purity before God.
